In Finland February 5th is Runeberg Day. J.L. Runeberg is the national poet of Finland and 5th February was his birthday. To celebrate, Finns eat little almond cakes topped with raspberry jam and icing. Why? Well, apparently J.L. had a wife called Fredrika who was a great baker. When her husband was in a bad mood, reportedly quite often, she’d would bake these treats as a pick me up. Fredrika was also a writer, ran the Runeberg household and brought up eight children! To celebrate J.L and Fredrika we are selling Runebergin torttu each weekend from 1st to 22nd February inclusive.
Runebergin torttu (Runeberg's cake) is a traditional Finnish delight bursting with flavour. Made with the perfect blend of gingerbread crumbs, flour, orange zest, cardamom and ground almonds, each cake is baked and then soaked in a luscious rum syrup creating a tasty, moist little morsel. These little tubes of temptation are then beautifully topped with a circle of almond flavoured icing and finished off with a blob of homemade raspberry jam. Perfect as a treat for yourself or as a gift for loved ones.
A portion is three Runebergin torttu.
